Ballarat preview

What Ballarat Races
Where Ballarat Turf Club – 240 Kennedys Rd, Miners Rest VIC 3352
When Sunday, May 8, 2022
First Race 12:30pm AEST

Racing returns to Ballarat on Sunday to conclude a big week of thoroughbred action in the state of Victoria.

On a predicted Soft 7 surface, race one kicks off at 12:30pm with the maidens going around, with the last at 4:50pm.

The quaddie starts at 2:50pm and race five looks to be a keen betting affair with the top four in weights looking to have very little between them.

Race seven looks to be a nice race over the 2000m trip and the quaddie should pay a good return for punters with plenty of value about.

BEST BET: Barretta (Race 5)

Barretta was just plain last start when sixth but we are going on his good win at Pakenham over 1400m back on March 31. He had two jumpouts prior and should be 100 percent fit now and should get a nice run settling slightly worse than midfield. For Team Hayes, this horse is slightly back in class from his most recent outing at Sale and we are counting on him getting his second Australian win after saluting in Ireland last year. Irish Playboy is an interesting runner for Henry Dwyer and must be respected.

Best Bet

Race 5 – Barretta #2 Barretta (2)

4yo Gelding | T: Ben & JD Hayes | J: Luke Nolen (60kg)

NEXT BEST: Lumin (Race 3)

Lumin comes back to Ballarat for another crack at breaking its maiden after running second here last start. Running for Andrew Noblet, the three year old filly won a jumpout prior and she should be cherry ripe for this race. She is up in distance to the 1200m and we would like to see her settle in the top three early from a good barrier in three. Heavenly Eagle is a danger having placed in two of three including her last start at Sandown.

Next Best

Race 3 – Lumin #7 Lumin (3)

3yo Filly | T: Andrew Noblet | J: Billy Egan (56kg)

$7 with Neds

BEST VALUE: Red Red Wine (Race 8)

Shea Eden has this horse going pretty well and we might get a handy price again here. He is consistent and has finished in the top four in his last four starts and we expect the same in this event. He is naught from two on soft ground but on both occasions the margins were not significant. He does get back a bit and makes a sustained run late so if there is genuine pace in the race that will help too. He started at double figure odds last time and anything close to that will be worth a play again. In a tough race, Yarra Boy must also be respected for Lindsey Smith.

Best Value

Race 8 – Red Red Wine #3 Red Red Wine (9)

4yo Gelding | T: Shea Eden | J: TBC (61kg)

$7 with Bet365
