Ballarat racing tips & best odds – Thursday, 3 September 2020
It’s been a long season, but the curtain is drawn on Thursday afternoon as Ballarat hosts the concluding meeting for the synthetic specialists. As is this case with all meetings on the plastic fantastic, there looks to be some real value on the card. With eight races set down for judgement, we’ll try and steer you into a couple of winners.
Thursday racing tips for Ballarat Synthetic
Race 6 – Raffine @ $2.80 Sportsbet
Archie Alexander’s Raffine has an impressive track record (9: 3-2-1) and looks to have the best form in the race. Having her fifth start for the campaign, you would expect this mare is reaching peak race fitness. She will make her own luck up on the speed, where Madison Lloyd will have the opportunity to sit one off the fence on the pace if she so chooses. If Raffine can give a kick at the top of the straight, she will prove hard to run down and should record her fourth career win.
Race 2 – Little Caleb @ $2.90 Sportsbet
This four-year-old gelding has been scratched three times over the past week and saved for one last crack on the synthetic. The Robert Hickmott galloper was beaten under a length last start at this track and distance by Incas and will look to go one better on Thursday. The main danger is Power Station (#6), who had every chance on debut but went down by a head. With race fitness on her side, Little Caleb will look to dictate terms upfront having drawn the widest gate in this field.
Race 8 – Ronay @ $6.50/$2.20 EW Sportsbet
It’s hard to believe that Ronay goes around at $6.50 in the last race of the season on the Ballarat synthetic. This five-year-old mare from the Patrick Payne stable is a genuine track specialist with five wins from nine starts here. On the quick back-up after racing at Pakenham on Friday, she will only be giving 2.5kg to her closest rival thanks to apprentice Tanya Childs’ 3kg claim. Racing at peak fitness and jumping from barrier two, Ronay will likely settle at the back of the leader and look for the gap in the straight.
