Ballarat double gets Carberry off the mark
Trainer Thomas Carberry won’t forget his hometown meeting at Ballarat where he prepared his first winner before making it a double.
Carberry prepared $41 outsider Diplomatic Jack to win a maiden on Wednesday and three races later sent out Rakti Roulette to win a benchmark 64 race over 2200m.
Diplomatic Jack was the 20th runner for Carberry since having his first starter at Ararat in January.
Carberry, who worked for fellow Ballarat trainer Darren Weir for two years before taking out his licence, has four horses in work with another couple of two-year-olds on the books.
“I love that the local trainers have been getting winners recently and I’m glad to join the team, especially here, it’s amazing,” Carberry told broadcaster racing.com.
“These are my stable stars these two, so I was hopeful.”
Carberry is a son of former champion Irish jockey Tommy Carberry.
Carberry Snr won the Grand National Steeplechase on L’Escargot at Aintree in 1975 before taking up training in 1982.
He trained the 1999 Grand National winner Bobbyjo, ridden by his son Paul.
