Avdulla rides treble, cops suspension

Brenton Avdulla’s desperation for life in the fast lane has come at a cost for the leading jockey.

In his haste to get to the outside section of the Hawkesbury, Avdulla found himself in trouble with stewards after Danish Twist won the Ladies Day Cup on Saturday.

Avdulla was suspended for five meetings for careless riding and in his evidence he told stewards: “(The going) was like a highway out there and I was trying to get there as fast as I could.”

As jockeys declared the rails a no-go zone, winners coming down the outside fence were commonplace.

The Hawkesbury Gold Cup winner Amovatio skirted the grandstand rail to overhaul Mighty Lucky who had to plot a path in the middle of the racetrack.

Avdulla’s suspension will start after next Saturday’s Rosehill meeting and he will miss the two-day Scone Cup carnival.

He ended the Hawkesbury with riding honours after also winning on the Chris Waller-trained pair Hipparchus and Mackintosh.
