2021 ATC Trophy preview
The Listed Australian Turf Club Trophy sees a 10 horse field assembled at the Gold Coast for this 1400m event on Saturday. Up and coming mare Socialising is the $2.40 favourite ahead of Vanna Girl, who is back in a much more winnable grade, and cult figure The Candy Man. Junction and Top Prospect look to lead, while The Hand and The Candy Man can be in prominent positions.
If we have learnt anything from The Candy Man, it is to put a pen through any of his Sydney runs. He just doesn’t have the class to match it with those Group 1 milers and doesn’t seem to like getting away from Queensland. After another failed Sydney Spring, he gets back to Queensland where he has superior form. On Thursday morning, the rain arrived which is ideal for the big grey, who has won four from five on heavy tracks, and two from three at the Gold Coast. He does have to carry a big weight, but he can do this as he has shown in the past. The weight is offset by a good draw (5) and he should get a lovely run under Michael Cahill.
Vanna Girl is undoubtedly one of Queensland’s top horses, and she too resumes in the sunshine state. The four-year-old mare has won seven of her 15 starts, including a four win streak over the winter last year. She was headed south for the Spring and finished an unlucky two lengths off Shout The Bar in the Group 1 Empire Rose at Flemington. Back to her home track at the Gold Coast, the Husson mare is likely to improve plenty as she gets out in trip and deeper into her campaign, but her class could carry her a long way.
Tony Gollan’s mare Socialising has been racing in a rich vein of form, winning her last two starts in good fashion at Doomben, so she should handle the Gold Coast for the first time. The five-year-old mare has won seven of her 20 starts and has been progressing through the grades nicely, so she deserves her chance at black type. Drawn well in gate three under regular rider Jim Byrne, she should get a lovely run in transit and can use her devastating turn of foot to beat these horses, who are resuming. She has fitness on her side, but may not have the class on our top two picks yet.
