Australian campaign likely for Italian Star
THE undefeated Italian star Goldstream, which is currently the second favourite for the 2015 Melbourne Cup at $17, has been purchased by Australian interests.
Goldstream is undefeated in five starts and that was good enough for Australian Bloodstock to make the purchase, with the Cox Plate first priority.
The Group 2 Italian Derby winner has been well backed by punters for the Cox Plate and Australian Bloodstock director Jamie Lovett is confident about its chances.
“It’s been awhile since we have been this excited about a new horse,” Lovett said. “Not since Lucas Cranach have we seen a horse do what this colt has done on the clock, at a staying trip.
“We noticed him after his first run back as a three-year-old, and followed him through before finalising the sale post-Derby.
“The form has been franked in both France and Germany, he is a very good colt.”
Sportsbet have Goldstream listed at $17 for the 2015 Melbourne Cup and the son of Martino Alonso is $21 for the Cox Plate and 15’s for the Caulfield Cup.
“We are hoping he gains an invitation to the Cox Plate,” Lovett said. “That’s our first choice race for him but the Caulfield Cup is also being considered.”
Australian Bloodstock raced last year’s Melbourne Cup winner Protectionist and Goldstream will be transferred from its former trainer Stefano Botti to Andreas Wohler, who trained Protectionist prior to its win last November.
“I wouldn’t completely rule out the Melbourne Cup, but right now it’s not high on priorities for the horse. We have Protectionist and Terrubi that we hope will be our Melbourne Cup horses.
“After the spring Goldstream will be transferred to Kris Lees where he will target the Sydney autumn carnival,” added Lovett.
Singing is another Australian Bloodstock runner which is being targeted for the Caulfield Cup and currently stands as a $34 chance with bookmakers.
