Australia Day Cup Betting Preview

The Listed Australia Day Cup (2400m) is the feature race on Tuesday at Warwick Farm. A field of 12 has been assembled for the staying race, which sees Wolfe start the favourite ahead of Skymax, Grey Lion and Elaborate. It will be a genuinely run mile and a half race, with speed coming from Tochi, Wolfe and Mushaireb.

Grey Lion is racing in nearly career best form at the moment, having finished no worth than fifth in his last five starts including a win and two placings. Last start, he was grabbed late but OTI Racing stablemate, Barade in the Magic Millions Shoot Out Quality at Eagle Farm over 2200m. He drops 2kg here, gets to 2400m and faces arguably easier opposition. With the speed on, he will be in a stalking role from barrier 7 under Nash Rawiller and should be too classy for them.

Mark Newnham will be hoping his import Skymax can replicate his win here two starts back when he won by 5L at this track and trip. He then went to Kensington and didn’t handle the heavy conditions and big weight, so just whacked away into fourth there. He drops 8kg off that run and gets back to a dry track which will be a massive advantage for the son of Maxios. Robbie Dolan will take the sit for the first time and should get into a similar spot to Grey Lion from barrier 4. With no weight, he looks the main danger.

Elaborate comes off a tough third in the Magic Millions Subzero a fortnight ago, so he should be rock-hard fit for this. Tommy Berry could ride a broomstick to victory at the moment, so that booking is a big advantage given they have to overcome the wide alley in barrier 10. Berry will no doubt navigate a forward path on the five-year-old gelding who is yet to miss a place in four starts over this trip. He can roll along just off the pace and be the one to stick it out with 54kg.
