Gimcrack Stakes Day betting preview

It is Gimcrack Stakes Day with nine races to be run and won at Ascot Racecourse in Perth on Saturday afternoon. The track is rated a Good 4, the rail is out 7m and a clear forecast sets the scene for some top-class racing in WA. The card is scheduled to kick off at 12:11pm local time, while the featured Group 3 Gimcrack Stakes for the two-year-old fillies comes up in the third leg of the quaddie.

Gimcrack Stakes: Pat’s Got Sass

Debut victories do not come much more impressive than what Pat’s Got Sass put forward over the 1000m here at Ascot on March 10. Having settled outside the leader, the David Harrison-trained filly kicked clear over the last 200m to salute by almost three lengths. She was seemingly doing her best work late which suggests she should handle the step up to 1100m with ease. The speed map suggests that Pat’s Got Sass will settle outside the race leader yet again on Saturday, and if she has taken natural improvement off her last run, then good luck catching her.

Grandstand Cup: Dig Deep

Finishing 10th at your last start behind a couple of the rivals you meet at your next is not usually the form you want to follow. However, Dig Deep certainly had plenty of excuses when finishing towards the rear of the field at Bunbury a fortnight ago. He is a get back and run on type of galloper, but from barrier two in the Grandstand Cup we expect Dig Deep to settle a little closer to the speed than what he is used to. There is no doubt he has one of the sharper turns of foot in the field and as long as he gets a little bit of luck when he needs it most he will be savaging the line in the Listed Grandstand Cup and be too hard to hold out.

Perth Stakes: Storm Whisper

Neville and Steven Parnham combine with the handy Storm Whisper in the Listed Perth Stakes and the Snippetson gelding has shown he has plenty of class about him. From barrier eight we expect Storm Whisper to lead this field up, and if his trial at Belmont on Monday morning is anything to go by, he has returned in fine order and will be hard to run down. He will make sure the Perth Stakes is a genuinely run affair, and if he is afforded a quiet time out in front, it is hard seeing any of his rivals being able to run him down.

Best BetRace 4 – Storm Whisper (#3) $3.20 with Sportsbet

Best Bet of the Day: Pletto

The five-year-old mare Pletto from the Ben Pearce stable looks well placed to break a run of outs with a win in the opening race at Ascot on Saturday afternoon. Her two main rivals in the race look to be battling it out for the lead in the race and with a bit of luck they will be pestering each other throughout the running and set the race up perfectly for Pletto. Having drawn barrier one, we expect Pletto to settle just off the leaders’ heels and with a perfectly timed run should be reeling in the leaders and going away from them over the final 100m.

Best BetRace 1 – Pletto (#3) $2 with Sportsbet
