Best Bet at Ascot – Cheval De Vaga
Meryl Hayley will be hoping her six-year-old gelding Cheval De Vaga can keep his amazing form going and bring up a fifth-straight win this campaign. This horse does his best racing when settling close to the speed and making a move at the top of the home straight. Apprentice hoop Keshaw Dhurun hops back onboard, replacing William Pike, and considering Dhurun had partnered Cheval De Vaga to his first three wins this time in, we know they have a great bond. From barrier seven, they will need a touch of luck early on so he does not get trapped three wide with no cover. If Dhurun can get the in-form galloper into the one-one or just outside the leader, then we expect Cheval De Vaga to be too good for once again and continue a fine run of form.
Next Best Bet at Ascot – Phanta
The Chris & Michael Gangemi-trained Phanta has finished second at each of his last four starts, but we expect Saturday will be his day to break through for a deserved second career win. The four-year-old gelding out of Gingerbread Man led the field up at Pinjarra on January 13 but was ultimately run down late in the shadows of the winning post. From barrier seven, we expect to see Brad Parnham have the big chestnut settled outside the leader in the race and close to the speed throughout. He is as consistent as they come, but this time around we expect Phanta to have his nose in front when it matters most and break a run of outs.
Best Value At Ascot – Brooklyn Pier
In the second leg of the quaddie, we are hoping the Neville Parnham-trained Brooklyn Pier can turn things around when he steps back to 1000m. The four-year-old son of Magnus had to do all the hard work chasing down a tearaway leader over 1200m at Ascot on January 15 and did well to stick on fourth, beaten just over a length. He gets into a RTG66+ that is no harder than that day and from barrier three is sure to gain a suck run in transit on the back of a hot speed. With even luck, we anticipate Steven Parnham will have the bay gelding poised to strike at a nice price with Sportsbet.
