What ANZAC Day Raceday
Where Ascot Racecourse – 71 Grandstand Rd, Ascot WA 6104
When Tuesday, April 25, 2023
First Race 1:09pm AWST

The Western Australian Turf Club will host a very competitive eight-race card this ANZAC Day, with the highlight event on the program being the $100,000 Diggers Cup. The track is currently rated a Good 4; however, with a fair amount of rain forecast to fall in Perth on Monday and Tuesday, we expect to be racing on a Soft track. The rail will be pushed out to the +5m position for the entire circuit, with racing set to kick off at 1:09pm AWST.

Diggers Cup Tip: The Spruiker

The feature race of the day is the $100,000 Diggers Cup over 1800m, where we have a small field of five runners competing in the third race on the program. We will be siding with the Steve Wolfe-trained The Spruiker, who will need to make up just under three lengths on the current odds-on favourite Weaponson from their last meeting in the Old Comrade Stakes on April 8 over 1600m. This son of I’m All The Talk hasn’t attempted the 1800m before, but with such a strong finish to his run last start, he appears ready for his maiden attempt. Troy Turner will take the ride, and from barrier two he should get the run of the race behind the two likely leaders – Big Bada Boom and Weaponson. If Turner can get The Spruiker off the fence and into clear air on the home turn, he will be staking his claim late, and his chances will only improve if the track is in the Soft range.

Best Bet at Ascot: Go Go Grommet

In the opener, the Tiarnna Robertson-trained Go Go Grommet will be looking to kick off his career with back-to-back wins. On debut, this three-year-old gelding jumped and led on the outside rail down the Pinjarra straight before kicking clear in the final 200m to record a dominant 2.7-length victory over 1000m on April 12. Brandon Louis has stuck with this gelding after riding him to that maiden win, and with the aid of his 2kg claim, he gets in the race with the equal-lightest weight. From barrier five, we expect Go Go Grommet to push forward, take up the lead and kick clear on the home turn to prove too good for this field.

Next Best at Ascot: Outfield

The second race of the day looks to be a race in two as Outfield clashes with Military Power. Both runners are coming off last-start seconds and look to have the superior form in this event. With both runners likely to settle on speed, we will be siding with the Darren McAuliffe-trained Outfield given he has drawn barrier one, whereas Military Power has drawn gate 10 of 10. Last start, this son of Deep Field finished second behind Kipitaki at Pinjarra over 1000m on April 12, after working across the field to take up the lead and ultimately not being able to go with the winner in the final 100m of the race. This gelding is drawn to get all the favours from his barrier and settle behind his main rival. If Luke Campbell can get him off the fence in the final 300m, Outfield should be able to run over the top of the leader late and break his maiden in style.

Next Best Again at Ascot: Wicked Fox

Wicked Fox, from the Neville Parnham yard, went very close to bringing up back-to-back victories over this track and trip on April 15. The four-year-old mare has finished inside the placings at her last five starts and appears to be in career-best form now. This daughter of Foxwedge has now had three starts at the Ascot 1800m, winning one and placing in another, and she stays at the track and trip in the closer on Tuesday. Steven Parnham has ridden this mare at her last four starts and will be legged back aboard for this No Metro Wins Last Year race. Parnham will look to settle in the midfield just off the rails, and if he gets even luck on Wicked Fox, she will be in this race for a very long way.
