Alice Springs preview

What Alice Springs Races
Where Pioneer Park Racecourse – Stuart Hwy, Connellan NT 0870
When Saturday, November 25, 2023
First Race 3:05pm ACST

Just 32 runners have accepted for the Alice Springs Turf Club’s five-event meeting at Pioneer Park on Saturday, but it all points to yet another good day of racing. Can Red Wraith make it five wins in a row for trainer Paul Gardner? That should capture the imagination of the racing public, as well as the clash between Great Buy and Supreme Times in the other feature race on the program.

Alice Springs received 57mm of rain from November 17-19, and there is a slight chance of more rain before the weekend. The forecast for Saturday is for partly cloudy conditions with east to north-easterly winds. There is the chance of showers and a thunderstorm, with a top temperature of 35C expected. The rail will be in the true position and Pioneer Park will be a good dirt surface.

BEST BET: RED WRAITH

Without question the Red Centre’s in-form horse, this four-year-old gelding is aiming for a fifth-straight win. He broke the track record for 1100m (1:01.87) when overcoming 0-70 opposition by almost four lengths a fortnight ago. He will carry a similar weight in the five-horse field, and it’s hard to see the son of Charm Spirit losing, especially if he controls the race out in front. Boy Big, third behind Red Wraith after missing the kick two weeks ago, Throw At Da Stumps and Magnolia Rose will be competitive, but Red Wraith is flying and looks nigh-on unstoppable.

NEXT BEST: RUPERT’S DELIGHT

Rupert’s Delight been a solid performer for the Lamprecht stable since arriving from the Cranbourne stable of Robbie Griffiths and Mathew de Kock, where he had 20 starts without a win but finished in the top four on 15 occasions. The son of Winning Rupert has been competitive in the Red Centre with two wins from nine starts, as well as five minor placings. His first win was a 1100m maiden in December before saluting in 0-58 grade in April. Rupert’s Delight hadn’t raced since July before returning in early November, finishing a solid third over 1100m at Class 2 level.

NEXT BEST AGAIN: RADIO ROOM

Radio Room missed the kick two weeks ago and was a clear last place in the nine-horse field before clicking into gear at the 600m of the 1100m affair. The nine-year-old gelding then made ground along the rails in impressive style before finishing 2.5 lengths adrift of Talent Quest in third place. To make up so much ground certainly caught the eye, and although he has another wide gate, he drops a further 2kg with his rider claiming 3kg. The son of Chatline has had 35 Pioneer Park starts since February 2020, with his record standing at 7-7-4.

Next Best Again

Race 2 – #7 Radio Room (8)

9yo Gelding | T: Greg Connor | J: Lek Maloney (a3) (57kg)
