St Patrick’s Day Cup tip: He’s Maverick

He’s Maverick has battled in South Australia since starring on the dirt in the NT last year. After finishing second in a 1200m Alice Springs maiden, the son of Ambidexter was third in the NT Guineas (1600m) before toppling the three and four-year-olds over 1600m on Cup Day. A first-up Darwin win over 1300m was followed by victory in the Darwin Guineas (1600m) before coming second in the NT Derby and Darwin Cup consolation – both over 2050m.

Best Bet at Alice Springs: Chief White Sock

Chief White Sock arrived from NSW last year and failed in three Alice Springs starts and on Tennant Creek Cup Day. The five-year-old gelding had four months off before having five starts for three wins, a second and a third over 1000m and 1100m. Getting to the front proved the key, and should he capitalise on a good gate and sit on the speed, the son of Headwater is in the mix despite the 61.5kg.

Best Value at Alice Springs: Black Zous

Black Zous, who has been up since December, was a first-up winner over 1000m at 0-58 level before coming third over 1200m in 0-64 grade. The son of Zoustar has finished second in his past three starts in the 0-64 ranks. The six-year-old gelding went down by 3.5 lengths to Zesty Spice over 1400m on January 18 and was 2.8 lengths adrift of Hellivit over 1100m on February 2. After being forced wide turning for home, Black Zous went down to Altar Boy by a nose over 1400m three weeks ago.
