Feature Race Race 8: Chief Minister’s Cup (1600m)
First Race 1:03pm ACST

Race 1 – $20,000 CAAMA Radio 0-66 Handicap (1100m)

Racing well and was all but home last Saturday before being pipped at the post by the fast-finishing Signor Fangio over 1100m (0-62). Super Famous won on debut in the Red Centre over 1100m (0-58). Fellow Queenslander Rojo Boom (Mark Nyhan/Sonja Wiseman) won a 1000m maiden in Alice Springs last month before a last start third over 1200m (0-58). South Australian visitor Starlite Valley (Kym Healy/Stacey Callow) hasn’t raced since Boxing Day, but must be respected. Thirsty, Shamrock Lass and Spill The Money may find their rivals a bit too classy.

Miles Prower Certainly boasts plenty of ability and should start as a warm favourite after a last start win over 1100m (0-66) on April 9. Has raced exclusively in Alice Springs on 10 occasions for five wins, two seconds, two thirds and a fourth after returning from a spell on March 26. Like A Heartbeat (Lisa Whittle/Lorelle Crow) had been racing well before a last start failure, so is worthy of consideration. Defactor (Jess Gleeson/Ianish Luximon) has been competitive since arriving from Queensland, while unpredictable pair Feed The Monster and Maudy are capable of anything.

The winner automatically qualifies for the Pioneer Sprint on May 1, so it will be a lively contest. After three runs in Alice, Tanner finally clicked into gear to post two wins to suggest that he is a serious talent. Duke Of Hearts (Terry Gillett/Stan Tsaikos) is one of the best sprinters in the Northern Territory and with the advantage of the inside gate is definitely the main danger. Last year’s Pioneer Sprint winner Smuggling (Phil Cole/Wayne Davis) returns after racing in Adelaide. Mathematics and last start winner Signor Fangio are backing up from last weekend, and won’t be far away.

An open affair, but perhaps the home ground advantage gives Future Dreams a significant edge. Has been racing well against similar opposition since February without getting the cash, so he could end the drought that extends back to July 11. Victorian galloper Halgard (Dick Leech/Sonja Wiseman) was a first up second over 1000m (0-62), so he cannot be overlooked. Envy Me (Lisa Whittle/Paul Denton), South Australian visitor Wicked Edition (Kym Healy/Stacey Callow) and Me Cabo (Greg Connor/Jessie Philpot) are capable of springing a surprise.

A lottery, but Kyd Rock rarely runs a bad race at Pioneer Park and was a last start winner over 1200m (0-58) on April 9. All up, Kyd Rock boasts seven wins from 20 starts in the Red Centre. Caitlin’s Angel (Kym Healy/Stacey Callow) also runs well in Alice Springs and returns after a first and a second in Birdsville. Lancer (Trevor Montgomerie/Sonja Wiseman), Debbonaire Boy (Ray Viney/Jessie Philpot), Sweet As Scandi (Kevin Lamprecht/Wayne Kerford) and Sudann (Gary Clarke/Jarrod Todd) aren’t out of it, while Marsalis and Fat Impacta can pull off an upset.

Jet Jackson racing well in Darwin after arriving from Victoria and has caught the eye since hitting town for the Alice Carnival. Toppled 0-54 opposition over 1400m on March 26 before making the jump to 0-76 level to finish a whisker behind the talented Bar Gem over 1400m last weekend. If he continues from where he left off last start he wins. Dick Leech pair Lunch Session (Paul Denton), a last start winner, and the always competitive Zap (Paul Shiers) are in the race up to their ears. Kym Healy pair Shame Shame Shame and Bolt I Am, as well as King Crab and Road Storm may find it tough.

Race 8 – $40,000 Red Centre Technology Partners Chief Ministers Cup (1600m)

A ticket to the $110,000 Ladbrokes Alice Springs Cup (2000m) awaits the winner of the weight-for-age event and the Darwin raider ‘Budget King‘ brings good form to Central Australia. The former NT Derby winner has wonderful 1600m form and won over the trip twice against quality opposition at Fannie Bay before heading to the Red Centre. That included a win over I Am The Fox, who won the 2021 Alice Springs Cup and is the hot tip in 2022. Trident (Mark Nyhan/Sonja Wiseman), That’s Justified (Terry Gillett/Stan Tsaikos), Orcein (Angela Forster/Sairyn Fawke) and Desert Lass (Lisa Whittle/Paul Denton) are a chance, while Coin Collector, Count Of Essex and Stealthy Lucas could pop up and salute.
