What Albury Gold Cup Carnival
Where Albury Racing Club – 16-46 Fallon St, Albury NSW
When Friday, March 24, 2023
First Race 1:15pm AEDT

It’s Albury Gold Cup Day on Friday afternoon and the Albury Racing Club have produced a competitive eight-race program for the meeting. We’re currently listed to be racing on a Soft 7 track for the Country Cup feature due to rain predicted in the lead-up to race-day and we’re not going to disagree with that assessment. The rail is in the true position the entire circuit as racing gets underway at 1:15pm AEDT.

Albury Gold Cup Top Tip: Summerbeel

The Listed level Albury Gold Cup is worth $200,000 and a win will see the victor gain entry into the 2023 Big Dance later in the year. Summerbeel should give us a great sight and lands on top in the 2000m feature. This four-year-old Savabeel mare was beaten convincingly at Moonee Valley on March 18, but things didn’t unfold how the Waterhouse & Bott yard would’ve expected. Queen Air was able to take up the running on that occasion and kick clear of Summerbeel which was to the detriment of our mare, particularly as that’s the role she’s accustom to taking. She still held second position throughout and Queen Air is a horse to follow moving forward, so we think the form will stack nicely for this Listed level affair. She gets in with the 54kg and gets a 5kg swing on the top weight danger, Mankayan; which should be ideal if Winona Costin can lead and pinch some cheap sectionals up on speed. Summerbeel is consistent and at the price with online bookmakers, we’re happy to side with her.

Best Bet at Albury: Bundeena

Bundeena will be looking for a hattrick of wins this preparation on Friday afternoon and finds another winnable assignment at Albury. He’s had two starts on resumption, both being winning efforts at Gosford and then Hawkesbury respectively. Both saw him round up his rivals with relative ease going on to score 5.2 and 4.6 length wins. He’s absolutely flying for the John Thompson yard and despite having to carry 61kg here from an awkward draw, Bundeena is a clear best of the day at Albury if they head that way. He’s been placed beautifully from the yard in this BM74 for the three-year-olds and will only need luck to be putting them away on Friday.

Next Best: Wondereach

Wondereach has had just one start for one win back on October 15 and although the margin was only 0.4 lengths, it was much more impressive than that. This son of Outreach hit the front very early over the 900m at Newcastle and was well exposed to be beaten after rolling out to the middle of the course. Jockey Jean Van Overmeire was able to straighten him up enough to score and encouraging win. Matthew Smith then elected to spell the gelding and now returns after 22-weeks along with two outstanding barrier trials to his name. Wondereach looks a very progressive type and this three-year-old can be making a mess of them at his best.
