Geelong Cup tips

THE Geelong Cup is one of the more tried-and-tested form races for the Melbourne Cup and it runs this Wednesday.

The 2017 field doesn’t feature any exciting international runners like it has in past editions, but the field of 12 does feature the popular Grey Lion, Lizzie L’Amour and Fanatic for some international interest.

We have free tips, form and updated odds for every race at Geelong this Wednesday, which also includes the Geelong Classic and Rosemont Stud Stakes.

Race 1 – BM64 Handicap (1400m)

Star Major was an impressive winner on debut at Sale. The Shea Eden-trained four-year-old scored easily by 3.5 lengths and the son of Starcraft looks like one to follow out of that meeting. It won’t be easy against a solid field here, but it looks to have a wealth of talent and it should be well-favoured with bookmakers.

Seracena is a talented mare for Lindsay Park which has raced against some nice types of late. The So You Think four-year-old finished seventh behind Egg Tart in April and it resumed with a tidy third at Flemington last start. There was plenty of improvement to be gained from that run and it should be close here.

Race 1 tip: Seracena to win at Neds.com.au

Race 2 – BM78 Handicap (2400m)

Ubin Thunderstruck finished 3.5 lengths behind race-rival Tiger Tim last start, but it didn’t get all favours during the run. The Darren Weir-trained stayer wasn’t suited by the pace, but it still managed to run on well. The five-year-old owns a win over Crocodile Rock at this distance this year and that’s top form.

Tiger Tim was an easy winner over a similar field last start and that form should hold up well. The Peter Gelagotis-trained gelding capped off some average form with the upset win last start and the former Kiwi showed how superior NZ staying form can be. Extending out to this distance looks ideal.

Race 2 tip: Tiger Tim to win at CrownBet.com.au

Race 3 – BM70 Handicap (1700m)

Pufnstuf might have an odd name, but it’s putting together a nice race record. The Daryl Brown-trained gelding has won four of its last five starts and that included a win over the smart Jamaican Rain last start. It strung three consecutive wins on the Geelong Synthetic track during the winter and that form should stack up well here.

Jimivag is going to find this easier than its recent starts. The six-year-old finished sixth behind Super Haze in the Banjo Paterson at Flemington earlier this year before running fourth in the Vobis Gold Stayers. There was little to like last start, but it’s a past winner at Geelong so consider.

Race 3 tip: Pufnstuf to win at Sportsbet.com.au

Race 4 – BM78 (1500m)

Macrobius scored back-to-back wins at Pakenham earlier this season before running well enough behind Alward last start. The Jamie Edwards-trained six-year-old has won five of its 32 starts and it has won and placed on this track. This is about its peak level of racing, but it should be paying nice each way money.

Aurum Spirit isn’t getting any younger, but it’s in good form following a last start placing at Bendigo. The Robbie Griffiths-trained nine-year-old runs best at Geelong with five starts for one win and two placings. It has good form at this distance and a win isn’t beyond the realm of possibilities.

Race 4 tip: Macrobius to win at Neds.com.au

Race 5 – BM84 Handicap (1200m)

Thelburg is a professional winner which has won six from 15 starts. The John Sadler-trained five-year-old is fresh up having not raced since May, but its form in this state is good with a win and a placing. It’s most recent start came behind the talented Cannyescent and its form prior included consecutive wins. It gets a nice draw and 1.5kg off its back.

Urban Ruler has won two of its three starts fresh and although this distance isn’t ideal, punters should be respecting its chances. The Greg Eurell-trained four-year-old was only caught late in the Silverbowl Final in July, but its form over 1400m is strong and it could lead them throughout here.

Race 5 tip: Thelburg to win at Neds.com.au

Race 6 – Geelong Classic (2200m)

Weather With You has been set for the Derby all season long, but it needs a win here to likely make the field. The Baker/Forsman-trained Kiwi ran on well enough behind Main Stage last start and the rise in distance is going to be ideal. Expect it to settle midfield from a good draw and get into its work early down the back straight.

Animalia was another which battled on well behind Main Stage last start, but punters should expect some improvement. The James Cummings-trained three-year-old is bred to see out this distance and it looked very good in patches in Sydney. It scored by over seven lengths to break maiden grades and it should go well again.

Race 6 tip: Weather With You to win at Unibet.com.au

Race 7 – Geelong Cup (2400m)

Grey Lion is an imported runner for Matt Cumani which has the talent to win this race. The 2017 Geelong Cup placegetter hasn’t had the best time of it since then, but there were positive signs in the Cranbourne Cup where it finished third. The six-year-old is better as a front-running type so don’t be surprised to see Luke Nolan to take the race into his own hands.

Kellstorm had the blinking light on after its placing behind Amelie’s Star in the Bart Cummings. The Weir-trained import has won and placed at this distance which is ideal and any easing of the track will be a huge benefit. The inside draw is ideal and it gets in with a light weight.

Race 7 tip: Grey Lion to win ($11) at Sportsbet.com.au

Race 8 – Rosemont Stud Stakes (1200m)

Quilista looks to have a nice future ahead of it after finishing third behind Snitty Kitty last start. The Weir-trained four-year-old was a quality winner at Caulfield in August and its subsequent starts have been impressive. Drawing barrier four puts it into a great spot near the rail and we’re expecting a top effort.

Crystal Fountain is unbeaten from four starts and it looks ready for stakes company. The Anthony Freedman-trained mare is bred to handle longer distances than this, but it seems to be coping well sprinting and the 55kg on its back will help here. It could pay to follow any significant betting moves for this runner.

Race 8 tip: Quilista to win at Unibet.com.au

Race 9 – BM70 Handicap (1200m)

Harbour Grey is a sparingly-raced sprinter which does run well fresh up. The Stephen Brown-trained six-year-old has won and placed fresh and it has placed in both starts at Geelong. Its most recent run came at Darwin where it finished a poor fifth, but expect a much better effort this time around.

Amadeus gets the services of Craig Williams who returns to the saddle having ridden the five-year-old at Sandown in September. The Michael Kent-trained runner has form behind the likes of Crystal Dreamer and Thelburg, so consider for the win here.

Race 9 tip: Amadeus to win at Bet365.com
