Plucky Plenary punt pays off for Donnelly at Wagga

Plenary showed a clean set of heels in its impressive maiden win at Wagga.

TRAINER Tim Donnelly’s decision to run two-year-old Plenary against older rivals has paid off after the filly nailed its rivals right on the line to take out the XXXX Gold Maiden Handicap at Wagga.

In a driving finish to the second race on the card, the daughter of Stratum surged to the line on the outside to pip race favourite Rapture Miss ($1.50 at WilliamHill.com.au) right on the line, while Dreamship rounded out the placings to deliver $1.70 to investors.

It was just the horse’s fourth start, but it showed a grit and determination to push to the post against more experienced horses to record an impressive win after firming late on track.

Plenary jumped as the second favourite and returned $3.50 at Sportsbet.com.au.

Plenary’s trainer Tim Donnelly told HorseBetting.com.au at the track that he felt a sense of vindication following the two-year-old’s win, and said the filly relished the additional trip in its 1400m debut.

“It just seemed to me like she was looking for more distance,” Donnelly said.

“It probably took her every bit of the 1400m to win the race too so, yeah I’m absolutely happy that I raced her.”

The horse has raced exclusively at Wagga in its four race career to date, but the trainer is already looking to Sydney following the breakthrough win.

Donnelley already has a meet in mind for the two-year-old filly that he believes will suit the galloper down to the ground.

“There’s a race at Canterbury a fortnight from Wednesday, a 1550m two-year-old race for non-metropolitan winners,” the trainer revealed.

“It looks like a nice race for her, and I think the 1550m will suit her too.”
