Mick Price rates La Fracas as the best mud runner in his stable, but the four-year-old galloper underlined his versatility with an impressive hat-trick at Flemington.

Despite drawing barrier one, La Fracas showed his potential on a firmer surface, coming from last to run down De Bergerac in the final stages.

Blake Shinn, who rode the colt to victory, made a bold decision mid-race to change course and steer La Fracas to the outside. Following Moby Dick and De Bergerac, La Fracas was still at the rear with 300 metres to go but swooped home out wide to claim the win.

Co-trainer Michael Kent Jr. praised Shinn’s daring move, describing it as “a winning move.” He added, “He’s got a big sprint this horse.”

Shinn, who extended his lead in the Melbourne Jockeys’ Premiership to seven over Craig Williams, highlighted the horse’s no-frills style of racing.

“La Fracas handled all conditions and will be suited up to 1600m,” Shinn said.

Kent Jnr explained that La Fracas, bred in the Northern Hemisphere, was six months behind his local contemporaries.

He revealed, “We’ve just worked him out,” noting that the horse had previously been tried over 1600 mmetres, finishing second in a race at Flemington, which he felt he should have won.

The victory on a firm track was significant for the stable, as Kent Jnr shared his satisfaction with the horse’s progression: “It’s nice to tick the (win) box.”

He added that La Fracas would be nominated for Melbourne and Sydney races in the hope of finding a heavy track in the coming weeks.
