Hayes looks to spring after Cannyescent’s impressive Sandown win
CANNYESCENT will have a crack at three wins in a row before being spelled for what could be an exciting spring campaign.
The Sona Bloodstock-owned gelding was a dominant winner at Sandown on Saturday, scoring a comfortable victory over the 1400m trip under the guidance of champion hoop Damien Oliver.
Carrying 59.5 kilograms, Cannyescent settled just behind the pace, hooked to the outside on the home turn and stormed to the line to triumph by one and a half lengths at the finish.
The victory dispelled any doubts that the son of Canny Lad and Juicy couldn’t see out the trip and took its record to four wins from six starts in this preparation.
Trainer David Hayes was full of praise for the four-year-oldand alluded that there could be more in store for Cannyescent in the spring.
“He was terrific. I think he is going to another level,” Hayes said.
“I’ve never seen him look better and he ran the 1400m right out – [Damien] Oliver was extremely impressed with him and so was I.”
Cannyescent has now won two on the trot, having won a benchmark 92 at Rosehill on May 6.
“It’s great for him to have won in Sydney and Melbourne in one prep – it’s just terrific,” Hayes said.
“I’ll keep him going because that was a firm track [on Sunday] and we know he likes a little cut in the ground – we’ll get another nice win before we back off him.”

A $6,000 purchase as a youngster, Cannyescent was the last son of Canny Lad to head to the sale ring and has turned into a bargain buy, with six wins from 13 starts and more than $220,000 in career earnings.
His owners were understandably elated with Saturday’s victory – taking to Twitter to celebrate Canny’s achievement.

Another win this preparation would put Cannyescent in good stead ahead of the Melbourne Spring Carnival later this year, however at this stage Lindsay Park have not commented on the next goal for the talented gelding prior to heading to the paddock.
