Venting named Alice Springs Horse of the Year for 2023/24

Darwin trainer Kerry Petrick claimed the top honour at the Red Centre Racing Awards on Saturday night when Venting was named Horse of the Year.

Kerry Petrick’s Venting was named Horse of the Year at the Red Centre Racing Awards in Alice Springs on Saturday night.

The six-year-old gelding secured the honour on the strength of his success in the Alice Springs Cup (2000m) in April.

The NT Derby (2050m) winner from 2022 had four wins and four minor placings from 11 starts at Pioneer Park during the 2023/24 season.

Venting was third in the St Patrick’s Day Cup (1600m) on Day 1 of the Alice Springs Cup Carnival in March and was fourth in the weight-for-age Chief Minister’s Cup (1600m).

The son of Star Witness was also named Middle Distance/Stayer of the Year.

With six wins, three seconds and three thirds from 17 starts, Paul Gardner’s Red Wraith was named Sprinter Of the Year.

The five-year-old gelding by Charm Spirit won The Soldier Lightning (1000m) during the Alice Springs Cup Carnival.

Kevin Lamprecht’s Beyond Ready was named Three-Year-Old of the Year after two wins and two minor placings from February-April.

Second behind Gardner’s Better Not Fuss in the NT Guineas (1600m), the son of More Than Ready won a $30,000 1200m feature on Cup Day.

Petrick and Darwin’s Sonja Logan were honoured by Women in Thoroughbred Racing NT as the top trainer and jockey, respectively, with 19.5 wins each.

Terry Gillett (25) was the leading trainer overall in the Alice Springs premiership, Paul Denton (24) the leading jockey, and Dakota Gillett (16) the leading apprentice.

Strathalbyn trainer Kym Healy and Darwin apprentice Emma Lines topped the charts during Cup Carnival with nine and six wins, respectively.

The Magic Millions Alice Springs Tried Horse Sale Performer of the Year went to Petrick’s Throw At Da Stumps after two wins and two minor placings from seven starts.
