Athabascan will be the first Melbourne Cup runner for the John O’Shea & Tom Charlton training partnership when he takes his place in the 2024 edition of the great race.

After failing in a last-ditch effort to qualify for the 3200m classic in 2023, the son of Almanzor secured his place in the Cup with his last start Group 3 St Leger Stakes victory at Randwick.

Athabascan has shown that he can run out a strong 3200m, but is there too much quality in this year’s contest for him to figure in the finish? Let’s take a look at his profile.

When will Athabascan run in the Melbourne Cup

Athabascan will join 23 other hopefuls when they take their place in the 2024 Melbourne Cup at Flemington on the first Tuesday in November.

After recently joining a training partnership with John O’Shea, Tom Charlton will train his first runner in the race that stops the nation.

Can Athabascan win the 2024 Melbourne Cup?

Athabascan has eight lengths he needs to make up on the like of Land Legend and Zardozi from when they clashed in The Metropolitan two starts back and despite winning at Group 3 level last time out, the +4000 is far too short a quote for such an inconsistent runner.
