One Smoothoperator launched onto everyone’s 2024 Melbourne Cup radar after a barnstorming victory in the Group 3 Geelong Cup (2400m) to assure his spot in the race that stops the nation.

The Brian Ellison-trained European seven-year-old brings winning form into the first Tuesday of November, but will it be enough to claim victory in Australia’s greatest handicap.

When will Onesmoothoperator run in the Melbourne Cup

Onesmoothoperator will take his place amongst a star-studded field of 24 on Tuesday afternoon in front of a sold-out Flemington Racecourse.

He will attempt to be the first European trained representative to claim the Melbourne Cup for the first time since Twilight Payment in 2020.

Can Onesmoothoperator win the 2024 Melbourne Cup?

Onesmoothoperator was utterly dominant in his Australian debut when saluting in the Group 3 Geelong Cup on October 23. The seven-year-old gelding was forced to sustain a long run and did so with ease going on to win by 2.3 despite pulling up lame post-race. With that in mind and a cut heel almost derailing his Melbourne Cup hopes, Onesmoothoperator could be a bit vulnerable on Tuesday. Having said that, if he produces anything close to what he put forward at Geelong, then the 3200m should not be an issue and his turn of foot will take him a long way in this year’s Melbourne Cup.
