Racing Victoria (RV) has pressed charges against trainer Robert Hickmott concerning substance allegations related to the racehorse Haaland.

The accusations, based on violations of the Australian Rules of Racing, have sparked controversy within the racing community.

First Allegation: Presence of Prohibited Substance

The charge under Rules of Racing 240(2) alleges that Hickmott permitted Haaland to compete with a banned substance in its system.

This incident occurred on February 11, 2024 during Race 5 at Bendigo Racecourse, where Haaland secured a victory in the Agnes Banks Equine Clinic Handicap, covering a distance of 2200 metres.

Race tests conducted on Haaland’s urine samples indicated the presence of procaine, a central nervous system stimulant classified under Division 1 of Part 2 of Schedule 1 (Prohibited List B).

Procaine is commonly found in veterinarian-prescribed penicillin products and is prohibited for use in racehorses on race days.

Both Racing Analytical Services Limited and the Racing Science Centre verified these test findings, intensifying the severity of the accusations.

  • Second Allegation: Lack of Treatment Records

The charge against Hickmott pertains to AR 104(1) highlighting deficiencies in maintaining Haaland’s treatment records.

On the 28th of March, 2024 when the RV stewards requested records of all treatments given to the horse, Hickmott’s documentation was found to be incomplete.

The provided records did not thoroughly outline the medications or treatments administered, violating the specified standards.

    Legal proceedings pending

These accusations will be addressed formally during a session of the Victorian Racing Tribunal, with a specific date yet to be announced.

The horse racing community is eagerly anticipating the tribunal’s verdict, as it could have repercussions on Hickmott’s career and impact the integrity of the sport.

This situation sheds light on the challenges in upholding competition, in horse racing and underscores the rigorous scrutiny that trainers and animals must endure under racing regulations.
