Magic Millions

THE Magic Millions Carnival is fast approaching and Saturday’s action at both Eagle Farm and Canterbury significantly shaped the 2YO and 3YO markets.

The Magic Millions 2YO Classic market favourite changed on Saturday after the Chris Waller-trained From Within toyed with rivals at Canterbury.

The two-year-old is now the $5 favourite at Sportsbet to win at the Gold Coast on January 14, which pushed former favourite Madeenaty out to $6.

Another Saturday winner to firm in the market was the Chris Munce-trained Ours To Keep which continued its unbeaten run and is now the $6 equal-favourite with Madeenaty.

Ours To Keep keeps Millions dream alive

Ours To Keep retained its unbeaten record when winning Saturday’s Group 3 B.J. McLachlan Stakes at Eagle Farm and now trainer Chris Munce has a legitimate Magic Millions 2YO contender.

The son of Seidnazar was only a $28,000 purchase and Munce said his winners as a jockey didn’t compare to training an up-and-coming juvenile.

“I have ridden Melbourne Cup, Golden Slipper and Cox Plate winners but there is nothing like this,” Munce said.

“The work you put into them as a trainer and then to see them race like that.

“Ours To Keep is some horse. He really sprinted today (Saturday) and he ran the 1200 metres out like I thought he would.

“I won’t be sleeping much in the next fortnight. What a thrill to have a horse like him in your stable.”

It’s now $6 for the feature on January 14 with stablemate Champ Elect holding steady at $19.

The current favourite is From Within which was another top winner on Saturday. The Chris Waller-trained filly scored an impressive win at Canterbury and will now press onto the 2YO Classic as the favourite.

“It’s only two weeks until the Magic Millions and we’ll be making sure that we put her under a bit of pressure at home before committing to going,” Waller said.

“We’ll work her with a few older horses, get a bit of cover and make sure she learns about that side of racing as well.

“But she’s a ready-made two-year-old, very professional. Has speed, manners, knows that to do, relaxes and switches off.”

Winning Rupert odds-on for 3YO Classic

Winning Rupert continued to amaze at Eagle Farm on Saturday when the Bjorn Baker-trained runner made it five-from-five.

The three-length win forced bookmakers to adjust their odds for the Magic Millions 3YO and the son of Written Tycoon is now $1.80 at WilliamHill.com.au to take out the feature.

Saturday’s three-length win confirmed the star three-year-old’s potential and Baker felt the relief heading towards to the Gold Coast.

“He was a little bit reluctant to go into the gates, so we’ve got a little bit to work on,” Baker said.

“But it’s a little bit of a relief too, it’s nice to see him continue that vain of form and hopefully he comes through the race well and we can go the Magic Millions in two weeks.”

Winning Rupert is the hot favourite over Thousand Guineas winner Global Glamour ($4.80) which wasn’t able to impress when finishing ninth in Saturday’s Nudgee Quality at Eagle Farm.

The three-year-old had trialled well leading into the race and it will improve with the effort.

Fellow Sydney-based runner Mediterranean was well-favoured in the betting, but it too failed to impress on Saturday.

The Snowden-trained gelding finished 10th as the favourite at Canterbury and the current odds of $12 are expected to drift.
