Ballarat horse racing preview – February 28, 2021
An eight-race card is set down for judgement at Ballarat on Sunday afternoon as we wind down from another jam-packed Group 1 weekend on the punt. The track has come up a Good 4, with the rail out 2m from the 1600-800m and then 8m for the remainder. With clear skies forecasted for Sunday afternoon, we are primed for a cracking day of racing at Ballarat from 1:20pm AEDT.
Best Bet: Salto Angel
Facing a rather substantial drop in grade, Salto Angel looks to be the clear best bet on the Ballarat program. Having been a touch disappointing first up behind Zou Dancer at Flemington on February 13, it looks like trainer Danny O’Brien is looking for a soft kill for the runner-up in last spring’s VRC Derby. Group 1 form and a minor placing in the Ethereal Stakes seems like the form we want to be with, and the filly looks well placed to break her maiden tag. Her only second-up run in her career saw her finish 0.75 lengths behind Oceanography at Sandown on September 9. With all the aforementioned form, she should beat these without too much hassle and finally break through for a win.

Next Best: Optimizzer
We were with the Nick Ryan-trained Optimizzer when he won at Wodonga on February 8, and he gave us no indication that we should not be with him at his next start. He won the way you want to see a $1.50 shot win and looked to do so with a fair bit left in the tank, suggesting the rise in class should suit him deep into his campaign. On the back of that win and his dominant performance at Moe two starts back, he looks the one to catch in the second leg of the Ballarat quaddie. With Rhys McLeod yet to run outside of the quinella aboard Optimizzer, expect the four-year-old gelding to finish right over the top of the leaders and savage the line late.
Race 6 – Optimizzer (#4)[rmOC_events_list event_ids=1362445_06]
Best Value: Jealice
The Archie Alexander-trained Jealice was well beaten at Pakenham last time out, when finishing 2.5 lengths behind Ruby Street on February 11. Ruby Street has since come out and performed impressively in town, and on the back of that Jealice looks the one to be with in the final leg of the Ballarat quaddie. Her win at Echuca to begin her campaign suggested there’s plenty of wins in store for the Hinchinbrook filly. With a hot tempo expected, she should be the one finishing over the top of them late in the piece.
