Cup hope chasing major pedigree update
Emerging stayer Blue Breeze will do his family proud if he can produce another special performance on Saturday.
The four-year-old is in hot form with an emphatic last-start win at Pukekohe in his open class debut off the back of a Rating 75 success at Te Aroha.
Blue Breeze, who was bred by co-owner Tony Gavigan, will face his toughest test this weekend when he steps out in the Group 3 Campbell Infrastructure Rotorua Cup (2200m).
“I was going to tip him out before Te Aroha and then he won and we took his blood after that and it was better than before,” trainer Allan Morley said.
“We decided to go to Pukekohe and he went and won by five and a-half lengths.
“We took another blood and it was good so we thought we should have one more go at Rotorua. If he can run in the first three or four it will be great for Tony, who owns the broodmare, and this one is her first foal.
“He’s working well, at the moment he’s bouncing around.”
The winner of three of his 13 starts, Blue Breeze originally arrived at Morley’s stable on veterinary advice.
“I’m a blacksmith and farrier by trade and work with vets and they advised Tony to send him to me to a smaller stable,” he said.
“He’s a Christmas foal and took a long time to develop. He’s growing all the time and he could be a Counties Cup and Avondale Cup horse next season.
“Training has always fascinated me. I’ve got two in work and one just broken in so I’d welcome a couple more.”
