2021 Todman Stakes betting preview

The Todman Stakes at Royal Randwick sees the two-year-old colts and geldings take part in a 1200m dash that serves as one of the major lead ups to the Golden Slipper in two weeks’ time. In what looks a race in three between Profiteer, Stay Inside and Remarque, it is clear that the winner of this will become the new Golden Slipper favourite. Profiteer will lead the field of nine, while Direct, Home Affairs and Stay Inside will all be prominent. Remarque should get the perfect run in transit from barrier two.

This goes one of two ways, in our view. Richard & Michael Freedman’s unbeaten colt Stay Inside (#5) has rated well, winning by a combined margin of 6.8 lengths in just two career starts. He won the Pierro Plate three weeks ago in dominant fashion over the 1100m and now takes the logical next step towards the Slipper, moving up to the 1200m for the first time. The draw in barrier eight could be a touch tricky, but with even luck he finds cover three pairs back.

The other way it goes is Remarque (#7) – in our opinion, the best horse in this race – proves himself to be a genuine Golden Slipper contender. He was dominant on debut; he over-raced, worked early, ran out in the straight and still won by two lengths eased down. His recent trial was super, coming from near last to finish with the winner under no riding. He has had a minor setback since then, but he will be better at 1200m and should benefit from the run. From gate two, he box seats under Tommy Berry and could simply blow them away.

Profiteer (#1) was terrific in winning the Inglis Millennium by 5.3 lengths, backing up his debut 2.75-length win at Flemington. Both of those came over the 1100m, and he didn’t beat a whole lot in either. Barrier one is ideal for his pattern, given he goes forward and burns the turf. We have reservations about the form and his credentials at six furlongs, so we are happy to lay the favourite.
