Surround Stakes betting preview – February 27, 2021
The Surround Stakes is the first of the restricted Group 1 races for three-year-old fillies leading into the Vinery Stud Stakes and ATC Oaks later in the Sydney Autumn Carnival. The 1400m affair sees speed drawn right across the park with Every Rose, La Mexicana, Away Game and Vangelic just some of those who will pursue the front. It’s $5 the field with Dame Giselle the favourite ahead of La Mexicana, Away Game and Never Talk.
Never Talk (#7) reeled off some exceptional late sectionals last time out behind Every Rose in the Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes, and she gets everything in her favour to go one better on Saturday. The Kris Lees-trained filly has won five from eight and looks ready to break through at the highest level. Drawn well in barrier seven, she will get back as per usual with Jason Collett aboard, and the sheer amount of speed engaged means she will get the race run to suit. She will need luck, but she makes a lot of it by herself.
Aussie Tom Marquand is back, and he is on a live chance in La Mexicana (#9). The Anthony Freedman-trained I Am Invincible filly has won five of her seven starts and has never finished outside of the placings. She returned this campaign with back-to-back wins including a gritty victory at Group 3 level last time out. She was only gunned down late by Hindaam in her only attempt at 1400m, and that pair spaced the rest of the field, so she should handle the trip no worries. She will be up on speed from barrier 10, which is a slight concern, but she has the tenacity to be in it for a long way.
Love Sensation (#34) has won only the one race, which came at Geelong in the spring, but then was only beaten 1.5 lengths in the Thousands Guineas Prelude before failing in the final. She resumed in the Light Fingers Stakes and finished fifth but was held up at a crucial stage and kept chasing all the way through the line. She won’t have to do any work from barrier one on the back of a hot tempo, and with even luck she can savage the line under Sam Clipperton. She isn’t the worst $34 chance going around.
