Sunshine Coast Cup 2021 racing tips – Saturday, January 30

The Listed Sunshine Coast Cup is the main race at the Sunshine Coast this Saturday, and it has attracted a decent field of 15. Running for $125,000 over 1400m, Rob Heathcote’s Emerald Kingdom is the $4 favourite ahead of Tokoriki Lad, Splendoronthegrass and Beaufort Park. The race favourite looks to be the natural leader, and that should help his chances.

Emerald Kingdom is a deserving favourite in our opinion and looks a great bet at $4. Having the in-form Michael Rodd aboard is a huge advantage, and the low gate in four will see the pair muster through to take the lead. The six-year-old has been in the placings behind Soxagon at his last couple, which is great form for this, and he is likely to get a bit of sting out of the ground, which will further aid his chances. He can lead all the way.

While Emerald Kingdom should get a soft time of it in front, ex-Victorian Splendoronthegrass is likely to be the one getting all the favours just off the speed under Steph Thornton. Trained locally by David Vandyke, the four-year-old So You Think mare has the advantage of a good gate and low weight, the latter of which will be vital in the home straight. The big long stretch to the winning post will suit this mare, and if something does decide to take Emerald Kingdom on in front, she is likely to get an ideal tempo and can charge home over the top.

Another locally trained galloper comes in the form of Garnett Taylor’s Bold Style. The four-year-old gelding simply loves winning, claiming the top prize in five of his 14 starts, including a win here on Caloundra Cup Day six months ago. He’s had six weeks off since his dominant win at Rockhampton, and that should see him ready to fire here on his home track. If the predicted rain comes and we race on a Soft 5 or 6, it will bring him further into contention with the minimum weight under Ben Thompson. He has definite each-way claims.
