The 2021 Group 3 R A Lee Stakes comes up in the second leg of the Morphettville quaddie on Saturday afternoon. A near-capacity field of 15 has accepted for the $150,000 race over the mile. Expect to see Territory Titan and Lord Vladivostok to take up the running, with Morvada and Ace Of Clubs not too far away. It has been nothing but a progressive campaign for the Peter Jolly-trained Morvada and the son of Mossman looks well placed to continue his good form at Morphettville on Saturday. He was last seen running second behind Groundswell in the City Of Adelaide Handicap on April 24 and was continually taking ground off the smart winner. He gets the advantage of barrier one on Saturday afternoon and will most likely sit just off the leaders heels in the box seat waiting for his opportunity to pounce. With regular jockey Jake Toeroek on board, we expect the pair to be charging through a gap in the home straight and proving too classy for a field with plenty of talent.
The locally-trained Lord Vladivostok looked to have his last start in his keeping with 200m to go, but seemingly peaked on his run to get swamped late on in the piece. Having drawn barrier two on Saturday, we expect the Michael Hickmott-trained son of Tavistock to settle up on speed and run a cheeky race at a nice each-way quote. Todd Pannell hops back on board, and is undefeated from his one ride aboard Lord Tavistock, and as long as he does not fold up like he did at his last start, he should be fighting out the finish.
There is no denying the fact that Vassilator on his day could blow this field away. But when his trainer comes out and calls him a “big dummy” after his last start Flemington win, it throws up red flags as a $3.50 favourite. He will be giving his rivals a fair start from the rear of the field, but if he brings his best to the R A Lee Stakes he will be hard to hold out.
