The sole Group 1 around Australia on Saturday is the $600,000 Queensland Oaks at Eagle Farm, and HorseBetting has sussed out a few top tips as well as a $100 betting strategy for the race.

A field of 14 has been assembled for the 2200m feature, with Chris Waller saddling up six runners. After a slashing second when fresh off a break, Bargain will run as the $4.80 favourite ahead of Australian Oaks runner-up Duais ($5.50) and Gold Coast Bracelet winner Grace And Harmony ($5.50). South Australian Oaks winner Media Award is a $9 chance, while the Waller pair of Charm’s Star and Only Words are both on the $8 line.

On paper there is not a great deal of speed, with Easifar and Splendiferous the likely leaders. It is a Group 1, however, so we expect that one of the rank outsiders might try and inject some tempo early.

2021 Queensland Oaks betting tips

We think the betting market has this one pretty spot on, so we are siding with Mark Newnham’s filly Bargain. The daughter of Cox Plate-winning stallion Ocean Park has been in the placings at her last three outings, performing brilliantly in the Adrian Knox Stakes, Australian Oaks, and The Roses at Doomben. Her run in The Roses was her first for almost two months, and while she was beaten 1.25 lengths, it was the perfect tune-up for the Queensland Oaks. The extra 200m of the Oaks will be ideal for this filly, and with Josh Parr on from the ideal gate (4), she should get every chance to win the Group 1 feature.

Duais had Bargain’s measure in both the Adrian Knox and Australian Oaks, so we cannot knock her much at all here. The Ed Cummings-trained filly has not been seen since her runner-up performance behind Hungry Heart in the ATC Oaks, but she was trialled well back in May over 1200m and worked well at Deagon during the week. While she is the horse to beat, she is first-up at 2200m off a two-month spell and barrier 12 could be a challenge given she tends to get back in the run. Hugh Bowman is a big-time rider and knows the Shamus Award filly well, so she certainly cannot be dismissed.

While we might be left with egg on our face for leaving one of Waller’s six runners out of our top three, we think local filly Good Soize could improve getting back to Eagle Farm and out to the 2200m. The Tony Gollan runner won the Eagle Way back in December at this track and was dubbed as the leading local hope for this race then, and knowing how well Gollan conditions his horses, she does have to be respected at the big price. Again, this filly is by a Cox Plate-winning sire in Adelaide, so she is bred to stay. Her first two runs this prep were terrific, finishing fourth in each, but she was a bit lacklustre last time out in The Roses, getting a long way out of her ground. Drawn in barrier one for Ryan Maloney, Good Soize should be a lot closer in the run this time and can give Gollan his second Group 1 in seven days.
