2021 Peter Young Stakes betting preview – Saturday, February 20

Rounding out the massive Blue Diamond Stakes Day card at Caulfield is the Group 2 Peter Young Stakes over 1800m. The field for the weight-for-age race includes five Group 1 victories shared between 11 runners following the scratching of Pappalino. A few of these will look to use this as a springboard towards the Australia Cup, so a strong performance is pivotal if they wish to contend for the Group 1 in a fortnight’s time.

The winner of the 2020 Peter Young Stakes was Miss Siska, who is back to defend her crown this year. She is expected to feature prominently in the battle for early supremacy in this year’s edition, with Homesman (#3) and Angel Of Truth (#4) also tipped to roll forward.

With a genuine temp expected over the 1800m, it looks perfectly set up for the Chris Waller-trained Shared Ambition (#8). He showed plenty of determination at his first run at Randwick on February 8 when holding out the handy Mount Popa in head-bobbing finish. He returns to Melbourne, and to a course where he has two wins from as many starts, including one over 1800m. He has three wins from four starts when second up and will take a power of holding out as he storms down the middle of the track.

Coming with a similar run to our top selection is Nonconformist (#9), who was only fair upon resumption behind Best Of Days in the Carlyon Cup a fortnight ago. Luke Currie hops on board for the first time and will look to settle in the back half of the field from the wide barrier, almost alongside Shared Ambition. Having only been outside of the top three on one occasion from seven starts at Caulfield, the Grahame Begg-trained gelding will feel right at home and should be fighting out the finish in a highly competitive race.

With the likes of Homesman, Regal Power (#1), Harlem (#2) and the in-form Paradee (#12) well supported in the betting markets at online bookmakers, this looks to be one of the stronger form races to come out of the carnival. Whichever horse wins it will be one to follow.
