Matron Stakes 2021 betting preview

The Group 3 Matron Stakes over 1600m is the second leg of the Super Saturday quaddie at Flemington. On the back of an impressive run in the Mannerism Stakes, the Anthony Freedman-trained Lunakorn has opened as a $3.60 favourite in the field of 10 fillies and mares. In a race that is usually kind to punters, it was Paint The Town Two who caused a blow out when saluting at $26 in the 2020 Matron Stakes.

With Sovereign Award in the race, there is no need to look any further to find the speed influencer. Lunakorn from the wide barrier and Scarlet Dream are expected to settle towards the rear of the field.

Jamie Kah has had success aboard three of the runners engaged in the Matron Stakes in the last six months: Sovereign Award, Quantum Mechanic and Lunakorn. She has opted to jump on the back of Lunakorn (#7) following a solid third in the Mannerism Stakes at Caulfield on February 20. It was the mare’s first go at black-type racing, and a 1.5-length defeat to Rich Hips and finishing a length off Perfect Jewell is nothing to be frowned at. Having won a BM78 for fillies and mares in December over the Flemington mile to end her summer campaign, we expect Lunakorn to be primed second up. She has a win and two runner-up finishes to her name from three second-up runs, and with Kah on board she is the one we want to be with in the Matron Stakes.

Silent Sovereign (#2) looked to be a bit of a hard-luck story when finishing just over a length off Quantum Mechanic over the Flemington mile on February 13. Having already tasted black-type success in the Group 3 Schweppervescence Stakes at Morphettville in April last year, this mare appears to have plenty of upside. She seems to be most effective when fresh from a spell, so you would think this is her grand final for this preparation. With a 4.5kg drop in weight, Silent Sovereign is the one that Lunakorn will have to beat.

Quantum Mechanic (#6) was backed last start as if she was unbeatable and duly rewarded punters, while Kansino (#9) has strung together consecutive victories at Sandown including a win over Quantum Mechanic. Both can figure in the finish.
