2021 Mannerism Stakes betting preview – Saturday, February 20

The Group 3 Mannerism Stakes for 2021 sees a field of eight mares compete for the $160,000 over 1400m. The Grant & Alana Williams-trained Perfect Jewel (#1) is the short-priced favourite with odds of $2 at leading online bookmakers. The race last year was taken out by Greysful Glamour, who managed to keep her rivals at bay with an all-the-way victory at odds of $9.50.

The clear leader in the race is set to be Sovereign Award (#2), who drops back in grade after competing in the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes and will be looking to get his autumn campaign back on track with a much-improved performance second up. Expect the market favourite, Perfect Jewel, to settle towards the back half of the field.

In a race that has been kind to favourite punters in recent years, it is hard to ignore the resuming Perfect Jewel on her return from a four-month spell. William Pike has a 50% win record when partnering the daughter of Redoute’s Choice, and the pair look hard to hold out on Saturday. With Sovereign Award expected to set a genuine tempo, the race looks to be set up perfectly for backmarkers such as Perfect Jewel. The field she meets here looks to be a touch easier than the standard she was competing against in the spring, and she has three wins from six first-up runs in her career. This is one of the better bets on the Blue Diamond Stakes card.

One of the more interesting runners in the race is Lunakorn (#7), who steps up to black-type racing for the first time in her career. She chased home a couple of handy types in the spring before breaking through at Flemington for a win over Re Edit prior to a stint in the paddock. Fresh off a nine-week spell, you would expect there to be a bit of residual fitness from the spring on her side, and from barrier one she draws to do no work in the running. The red-hot Jamie Kah helps her chances, while a win and a second placing from three first-up runs shows she comes to hand quite quickly in a campaign.

Proven prop performers such as Sovereign Award (#2) and Rich Hips (#3) cannot be discounted in a field like this. If given the chance, they will be there or thereabouts in the concluding stages of the Mannerism Stakes.
