Guy Walter Stakes racing preview – February 27, 2021

A field of 10 quality mares will fight it out in the Group 2 Guy Walter Stakes (aka Wiggle Stakes), the first lead up to the Coolmore Classic and Coolmore Legacy. Chris Waller’s mare Funstar was the $4 favourite before her scratching, which leaves Icebath as the $3.50 market elect. Greysful Glamour is another notable withdrawal, and that could see Sweet Deal take up the running instead.

John Thompson’s mare Sweet Deal (#4) flies fresh and loves the 1400m. Drawn well in gate three under Nash Rawiller, she will be on or around the tempo throughout and should be well within striking distance at the business end. She won the Triscay Stakes first up 12 months ago and took out the Toy Show Quality when fresh in the spring, so this could be hers to lose. She was a great winner of The Hunter at her most recent start in November and has trialled well in the lead up to this assignment. This is the one to beat.

Icebath (#7) battled on gamely last time out behind Tailleur and Tricky Gal when fresh, so the fitness in her legs and rise to 1400m should suit her. The four-year-old Sacred Falls mare has won second up in the past and is yet to miss the places over seven furlongs. Drawn in barrier six and ridden by Tom Sherry, she should not be too far away in the run – potentially three pairs back on the outside – and can savage the line late. She will have a greater advantage if the rain stays around.
