Another mouth-watering clash is set to be run in the seventh race at the Gold Coast on Saturday, with the $150,000 Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas. Won by some top horses of the years, this year’s winner will not look out of place on the honour roll. Marboosha is the $4.80 favourite ahead of Rocketing By and Simply Fly who share the second line at $6.50 and Lord Olympus who is a $7 chance. Immortal Love is likely to be on the speed from the inside alley, along with Wisdom of Water, Tramonto and Kisukano.

It was a case of what could have been in the Mick Dittman Plate a fortnight ago. Simply Fly was backed off the map into as little as $2.30 in the Listed feature, and after jumping well, took fright at some seagulls that flew over the top of the pack and he threw the rider, Steph Thornton. He was ordered to trial after that anomaly, and he did that comfortably, so we are happy to be with the gelding in this. Three starts back he won the 3YO QTIS Jewel at this track and distance on a Heavy 9, and while it may not be that wet, there certainly will be racing on a rain affected surface. Drawn gate 10 under Stephanie Thornton, the son of Spirit of Boom will settle in the second half of the field and will be finishing off strongly again.

Immortal Love is one runner who could come out and brain them, but he just left us a little bit flat after his last start effort on ANZAC Day at Flemington. The son of Snitzel won the Group 3 McNeil Stakes when fresh back in August, where he defeated Flying Award and Tagaloa at Caulfield, before going amiss in the Exford Plate. He resumed over 1100m at Caulfield and was luckless, but still worked home very well to finish sixth behind Minhaaj. He was wide throughout in his most recent run, so we are going to put a pen through that and hope that he just needed the run and can peak third-up. The wet track will suit, and the inside alley under Nash Rawiller should see him box seat. He’s right up to this on his day.

Local galloper Garoppolo certainly doesn’t have the racing record of some of these, but he may well have similar ability. Maryann Brosnan’s son of Per Incanto has had just three career starts which has seen him win twice and finish fifth when first-up in the Mick Dittman Plate last time out, only to be beaten less than three lengths. Robbie Fradd has ridden this gelding in all three starts and has retained the ride here which is a big advantage, and he has drawn well in barrier two to settle a bit closer than usual. The three-year-old has never raced beyond 1100m, with both wins coming on good tracks over 1000m, so there is a question mark surrounding his credentials over 1200m on a rain affected surface, but he could well be the one to spoil the party with his sharp turn of foot. $19 appeals in a race without a great deal of value.
