Frances Tressady Stakes betting preview – February 27, 2021

The Group 3 Frances Tressady Stakes for the fillies and mares closes out the blockbuster Flemington card on Saturday afternoon. It is worth a cool $160,000 and run over 1400m, and plenty of these horses will be looking to build towards some of the big races in the Sydney Autumn Carnival.

The battle for the early supremacy looks to come from the two class runners in the field, with Shout The Bar and Greysful Glamour both looking to find pole position out of the gate. The likes of Chaillot and Affair To Remember will set to settle towards the rear of the field.

A 1.25-length defeat to the star mare Probabeel in the Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes is superb form to follow in a race like this. Hence, we are siding with the Peter Chow-trained Paul’s Regret (#10) in the Frances Tressady Stakes, especially with William Pike on board in the last race on the card. That run in the Geoffrey Bellmaine on February 6 at Caulfield was the mare’s first crack at black-type racing, and she will only benefit from that third-up effort. With a genuine tempo expected, look for Pike to settle his mount just off the speed and present her with plenty of open air early in the straight. If Paul’s Regret can run up to her last showing, she will take some beating.

Snapdancer (#8) also comes out of the Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes and will need to overturn a 0.75-length third behind Paul’s Regret if she is to feature here. She is also a runner who likes to settle towards the front of the field, but from barrier 10 she may look to slot in the moving line just off the leaders and outside our top selection. With a win over the handy Tailleur already under her belt, she is the main danger to Paul’s Regret in our eyes. Although she has only one placing in three goes over the 1400m, we expect her to run a big race.

With Greysful Glamour (#2) already in the All Star Mile, you would want to see a smart performance this weekend if you were her owners. All six of her career wins have come on Good ground, and although she is also accepted at Randwick, we fully expect her to be racing at Flemington on the dry track. If she can settle in front of Shout The Bar and Luke Currie can dictate terms, it will take a big effort to run her down.
