Expressway Stakes 2021 betting tips – Saturday, January 30

The Group 2 Expressway Stakes is the highlight of the afternoon at Rosehill Gardens this weekend, marking the beginning of the Sydney Carnival. A field of nine has been assembled for the 1200m race, including three Group 1 winners and last year’s victor, Standout. Savatiano and Ole Kirk share favouritism ahead of Standout and Star Of The Seas. Mizzy looks the natural leader from out wide, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see Savatiano kick up and hold the front from barrier two.

James Cummings saddles up his very classy mare Savatiano, and she looks beautifully placed to win first up again. Drawn in barrier two under Hugh Bowman, she’ll be in the first two or three in the run and should be able to relax and look to kick away in the straight on a track that often suits those on pace. The mare by Street Cry has won five from eight when first up, including Group 2 wins in the Millie Fox and P.B. Lawrence. At weight for age, she might be just too good for them.

The Caulfield Guineas winner, Ole Kirk, looks the natural danger here as he looks to add even more value to his budding career at stud. The son of Written Tycoon has won just the three races, but they are the Listed Talindert Stakes and two Group 1s in the Golden Rose and Caulfield Guineas. Tommy Berry knows the horse very well and should be able to navigate a simple route from the inside alley. The 1200m might be a touch short, but he goes well fresh and loves Rosehill so should be competitive here.

Chris Waller is the leading Sydney trainer for a reason. It has a lot to do with placing his runners perfectly and his ability to take out feature races, so it is hard to look past his two chances here. Between Kolding and Star Of The Seas, we are leaning towards the latter. He thrives at this track and flies when fresh, having won two and run second three times from six first-up runs. Sam Clipperton goes on and will have to look for a spot from the outside alley, but he should be able to settle at the rear of the field and still only be three or four lengths off them. It has been a while between drinks for the Ocean Park gelding, but he does get conditions to suit.
