The Group 3 Eskimo Prince Stakes is one of the features of the afternoon at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday. A strong field of 10 has been assembled for the 1200m sprint, which sees Golden Rose runner-up, North Pacific the even money favourite. There looks to be plenty of speed in the race, with Vreneli, The Face and Peltzer all leaders.
We are siding with the only filly in the race here, Never Talk. Kris Lees’ consistent galloper has won five from seven and is drawn well in barrier 1 to get into a comfortable spot and be finishing over the top of them. She gets the bottom weight as well, which is a big advantage here. While she may not necessarily have the class of some of her rivals, she certainly has the fitness edge and will be suited by the hot tempo late. $26 at the best Aussie bookies appeals here.
North Pacific is clearly the deserving favourite on class alone, and he probably gets a good run in transit, but we are slightly concerned about where he gets to in the run. From barrier 4 under James McDonald, he will likely be tucked away on the fence which could be disastrous in the straight for favourite backers. No doubt he is the best horse in the race, but we are sniffing a scent of bad luck.
Prague is another who oozes class and looks well placed here first-up. The Annabel Neasham-trained colt put in a good effort first-up last campaign when fourth to Doubtland at Flemington, which bodes well for a race of this nature. Tommy Berry will go forward from the wider gate and put himself right in the race which is advantageous. The blinkers come off for the first time and the Cross-Over Noseband goes on which should see him settle a touch better. He can win this and not surprise us.
