The Group 2 Emancipation Stakes may not be a Group 1 by name, but the field will no doubt be very similar in two weeks for the Group 1 Coolmore Legacy, with this race holding the key. Run over the 1500m, a field of 11 mares has been assembled, including last-start Coolmore Classic winner Krone, who tops the market with the top bookies at $3.30. With speed coming from Irithea, Greysful Glamour and Sweet Deal, it should make it a genuine race.

While Krone has proven a money pit at the Gold Coast and her two runs in Sydney, we still haven’t learnt and are going to take on Gollan’s consistent mare once more. Matthew Smith will leg up Rachel King aboard dominant last start winner Nimalee here second-up. The four-year-old by So You Think has won five of her 11 starts and placed a further four times, with three of those being second placings over the 1500m, so she will relish the trip. Down on the minimum weight from the inside alley, she will get a beautiful run just off the speed which will see her hard to stop late. It is worth noting that Rachel King hops off her favourite horse Greysful Glamour to keep the ride on Nimalee.

Krone is the obvious danger and a deserving favourite as she now looks for four straight wins. The Queensland local was an upset winner in the Magic Millions Fillies & Mares race on the Gold Coast, beating Athiri at any old price; but has since gone on to prove that it was no fluke, winning both the Group 2 Guy Walter Stakes and the Group 1 Coolmore Classic at this track and trip last time out. Drawn gate two under Tim Clark, she should get the favours in the run three or four pairs back and be looking to finish off strongly. Krone would prefer it wetter, but her Coolmore win came on a hard, Good 3. We aren’t saying she can’t win this, she can, we just missed her at $50s, $16s and $13s, so we don’t want to be betting at $3.

We have seen a similar situation with Greysful Glamour in the past; she doesn’t go a yard in the wet, and then comes out and bolts in next start. That is the sort of set up we are dealt with on Saturday. The grey, front-running mare ran last in the All-Star Mile on a bottomless track, so she will appreciate getting back onto a dry track on Saturday. Drawn barrier five under James McDonald, she will be sent forward and will try to run her rivals into the ground. While she might not be quite up to this class and be more suited to Listed and Group 3 level, she does get the right race shape to sneak into the placings.
