Chipping Norton Stakes betting preview

The first Group 1 of Sydney’s autumn schedule is upon us with another cracking edition of the Chipping Norton Stakes. Headed by two quality mares in Verry Elleegant and Colette, the field of nine has seven Group 1 winners with Southern France and Master Of Wine the exceptions.

Funstar holds a position in the Guy Walter and the Blamey Stakes at Flemington, but if she runs in this, she looks the leader. Outside of her, Colette will hold a forward spot, while Kolding and Prince Fawaz might use their gates to be handy.

It’s hard to go past Collette (#7) after she led all the way in the Apollo Stakes, fending off the challenge of Kolding and Verry Elleegant. The Hallowed Crown mare was dominant this time last year when she won the Adrian Knox Stakes and the ATC Oaks at this track, so she should feel right at home at Randwick this weekend. She is yet to lose a race on wet going, including a photo-finish win in the Golden Eagle on a Heavy 9. There is no speed in this, so Rachel King will take her forward and make every post a winner.

The class of the field here is Verry Elleegant (#6). Chris Waller’s five-year-old mare has won six Group 1 races and has 11 wins overall from 26 starts. The $7 million earner is yet to win a race at 1600m, which brings some doubt, but with no speed on she might be able to settle close to the pace from barrier four under James McDonald and sprint with them in the straight. Class could prevail.

Master Of Wine (#4) had a massive spruik going around him for the Spring Carnival but didn’t fire a shot, managing a fourth in the Makybe Diva Stakes as a highlight. That run came second up off a three-week freshen up, and he didn’t have a gut-buster when first up, so he should race similarly in this. Drawn on the outside, Tommy Berry should go forward and try to run them off their feet. This one goes great fresh and should be effective at the mile.
