The Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes is the joint-featured event on the nine-race Morphettville card on Saturday afternoon. The 2040m event will be run on the course proper and should bring those runners from back of the field more into play, unlike if this race was run on the Parks track. There looks to be a sole leader in the field, with the maiden Ichibansan set to make this a genuinely run affair. There was plenty to like about the way the Mick Price-trained Deepstrike took out a BM64 on March 31 at Sandown, where he made up a stack of ground to then go past and put a decent space on his rivals. Michael Dee follows the son of Tavistock across to Adelaide, which is an added sign of confidence heading into the race. With a genuine tempo expected over the 2040m, he should have the race run to suit him and be finishing over the top of his rivals as he stamps his claim to future Group 1 success.
Royal Mile could not have been any more impressive when taking out the Listed Port Adelaide Guineas a fortnight ago and will be settling around the same position as our top pick. The Lee Creek-trained gelding is yet to finish outside of the quinella in seven career starts, winning four of those. His turn of foot is sharp, and he has shown in the past he can be versatile in settling either close to the speed or towards the rear. Expect him to be fighting out the finish alongside Deepstrike with not much separating the two.
The Victorian form looks to be the strongest to follow outside of Royal Mile, and with Miletus and Ellmaknifico both impressing at Sale on their last starts. They look to be the only other chances in the big field of 16.
