Chairman’s Stakes 2021 betting preview – Saturday, January 30

The Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes for the two-year-olds is one of the featured events on the Caulfield card on Saturday afternoon. The current favourite for the Blue Diamond Stakes and Golden Slipper, Enthaar, has come up a short-priced fancy for the 1000m dash and will look to resume in fine form in the lead up to bigger and better things this campaign. The winner of the 2020 edition was Mildred, whilst the recently retired Loving Gaby took the honours in 2019.

Enthaar could be anything. She has had three public outings to date, with her only race start culminating in an arrogant win in the Group 3 Gimcrack Stakes at Randwick back on October 3. Prior to that she blitzed her rivals in her first trial, and following a spell after her win in the Gimcrack she came out and ran the fastest time of the morning in a trial at Werribee on January 12 under her own accord. From barrier one she looks to be the leader of the small field, and all her form thus far suggests it will take an enormous effort for one of these to run her down.

If there is going to be anything that beats Enthaar, it is the Godolphin colt Ingratiating. He has been superb in both of his runs to date and has some handy form tying him in here. On debut he beat General Beau in the Listed Maribyrnong Stakes, and that horse has since come out and won the Blue Diamond Preview on Tuesday at Caulfield. He also has a narrow defeat to his name behind Finance Tycoon, who has since beaten home the Magic Millions winner Shaquero. If he runs to that form here he has some chance of causing an upset, but either way Ingratiating is certainly one to follow.

The winner is bound to come from the runners who have had race-day experience, and filling out the trifecta in the Chairman’s Stakes looks to be Son Of Mercury. The stablemate to the favourite was beaten three-and-a-half lengths in the Inglis Banner and has been given time off to mature. If he wins it will be a massive upset, but he looks to have plenty of upside.
