2021 Canterbury Stakes betting preview

The second of the Group 1 races at Randwick on Saturday is the Canterbury Stakes to be run over 1300m for $500,000. Triple Group 1-winning entire Bivouac is the $3 favourite ahead of his stablemate and likely lamplighter Savatiano, while Masked Crusader sits on the third line as the only other runner in single figures. Samadoubt, Dreamforce and Savatiano will all be handy in the run, while Mizzy is likely to use her inside draw to push forward.

Bivouac (#1) is classes above these. Now second up and racing at set weights, he should prove far too good. We were right in his corner in the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes, but hindsight goes on to show that the 1000m first up may have been a touch too sharp for him. Rising to 1300m and returning to Randwick, where he has tasted success at in the past, should be a winning recipe. Glen Boss has won two Group 1 races aboard the son of Exceed And Excel and will be hoping to make it a third. Bivouac should get the gun run from barrier eight and be too good for them.

The further they had gone, the further Masked Crusader (#7) would have won by in the Southern Cross Stakes three weeks ago, so the rise in trip from 1200m to 1300m should not be an issue for the talented son of Toronado. Trained by the Hawkes operation, the four-year-old gelding has offered plenty without delivering too much to his faithful followers yet, despite winning four of his eight starts. This is his first test at the highest level, so it will be a good gauge on where he is really at, but he should do enough to figure in the finish.

The four-year-olds look to have a hold on this race, with Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott saddling up Dawn Passage (#6). The Dawn Approach entire has never missed the placings in four first-up runs and goes well at Randwick. He placed in the Golden Eagle behind Colette and Ice Bath before running second to Archedemus in The Gong and beating Think It Over, who won at Group 3 level on Saturday. Under Tim Clark, he should get a good run stalking the speed and be right thereabouts at the business end.
