Canberra Cup beting preview

The Listed TAB Canberra Cup (2000M) is set to be run and won again for another year, with a field of fourteen having been accepted. Entente is the $3.40 favourite after running second in the Canberra Mile last start, while Dadoozdart and Aussie Nugget sit on the second and third lines respectively. Hush Writer should hold the speed from barrier three, but we also expect to see its stablemate and race favourite Entente push forward from his outside alley.

Anthony & Sam Freedman take just the one runner to Canberra, and Melbourne Cup winning jockey Jye McNeil is there for just the sole ride too, so that’s enough to push us in that direction. Aussie Nugget won at Caulfield two starts back in a Benchmark 78, before being the unlucky runner in the Listed Mornington Cup Prelude when fourth to Defibrillate. The son of Dansili has won five races from 20 starts, but has yet to win over 2000m, albeit from only the one start. Drawn barrier ten with 54kg, he should get a nice run three or four pairs back on the outside with cover and will be making his presence felt late. Aussie Nugget can win the Cup from Australia’s Capital City.

Tommy Berry has a great book of rides on Monday, and he partners Dadoozdart in this for the Hawkes camp. The five-year-old son of Dawn Approach should now be peaking fourth up and out to 2000m for the first time this campaign. Formerly trained in Ireland, the gelding is now into what is really only his first full Australian preparation, so he should be getting near ready to win his first Australian race. He will get a lovely run in transit from barrier two and should be savaging the line late.

Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott know what it takes to win a Cups race, and we believe that top-weight Hush Writer is the one out of their two who can give them a Canberra Cup. The six-year-old has drawn perfectly in barrier three and gets Nash Rawiller on board for the first time, which will suit his racing style, which is to go forward and lead. He does have the top weight of 58.5kg and he is giving the rest of the field 4.5kg, but he is the class horse of this field, so it is a deserving top weight. With little to no pressure in the race, he could well be able to pinch this.
