Blue Diamond Preview (Colts and Geldings) Betting Preview
The first featured event on Caulfield’s eight race card on Australia Day is the Blue Diamond Preview for the Colts and Geldings. The Blue Diamond preview is usually a perfect build up to the Prelude and the Blue Diamond itself, and the 2020 winner of the Blue Diamond Preview for the boys Hanseatic proved that by going on to win the Prelude and then ran second in the Blue Diamond Stakes.
The 2021 running of the Blue Diamond Preview for the boys will jump at 2:20pm AEDT.
In what looks to be a tough edition of the Blue Diamond Preview for colts and geldings we have settled on the Maher and Eustace trained Gulf Of Suez following two impressive wins at Morphettville during the spring. He comes to the Blue Diamond Preview fresh off an eight week break between runs, and if his last start six length victory is anything to go by he will make sure this is a genuinely run 1000m sprint. Mark Zahra will look to dig him out of the barriers early on and get him to the front, and as he showed at his last start win on November 28, he will look to go for home early and could be too speedy for this field.
If there is going to be one to upstage our top selection, it will be General Beau who sent tongues wagging back on September 23 when thrashing his rivals down the Flemington straight as a $2.70 favourite on debut. He then was a touch disappointing when finishing second on October 3 in the Maribyrnong Trial Stakes as a well backed $1.50 favourite. What he will have to his advantage is that he has had black-type experience, and Jamie Kah stays on board. General Beau will look to keep Gulf Of Suez just off the rails, and if he is successful in doing so it could go a long way to helping claim the Blue Diamond Preview for the males.
Marine One was well backed on debut in the Maribyrnong Plate back on Melbourne Cup day, but could do no better than a third place finish on that day. His form ties in beautifully here with the quinella in Finance Tycoon proving to be quite the two-year-old and Ingratiating being the one to beat General Beau. Marine One looked like he needed that run down the Flemington straight and coming off a 12 week spell he is primed to run a huge race here. He gets around the bend for the first time and with Damien Oliver on board he looks to be well over the odds despite the wide barrier.
