2021 Blue Diamond Prelude (Colts & Geldings) betting preview – Saturday, February 06

The Blue Diamond Prelude for colts and geldings sees some of the best two-year-old boys head to Caulfield this Saturday, with a field of 11 set to compete for the $200,000 kitty. Coming off a win in the Blue Diamond Preview, General Beau has opened as a $3.20 favourite in the Prelude and will be looking to build on his form heading into the Blue Diamond Stakes in a fortnight. He will look to complete the Preview/Prelude double as Hanseatic did in 2020.

It is now near impossible to ignore the debut win Jigsaw put together at Geelong back on January 7. The horse that ran second was Artorius, who came out and smashed his rivals at his next start in arrogant fashion. The Cindy Alderson-trained colt maps to take up the running, and with General Beau the other only known frontrunner, he should get a quiet time in front. With Michael Walker retaining the ride, the duo rate quite highly, and it usually is no disadvantage to be up on the speed on rain-affected going at Caulfield.

The in-form Ellerton & Zahra stable and the in-form Jamie Kah team up with the in-form General Beau. It all looks perfect, right? Well, maybe so, as he maps to be on the rails either inside Jigsaw or just off his heels and will look to sprint home with a nice turn of foot as he did in the Blue Diamond Preview a fortnight ago. This race looks to be a touch harder than what he encountered in the Prelude, especially with a majority of the rivals having raced previously. If the rain does eventuate, it will be interesting to see if he can handle the going, as all of his three starts have been on firmer ground.

Lloyd Kennewell’s Marine One was a touch unlucky in the Blue Diamond Preview when slightly held up at a key time in the straight. He eventually worked through his gears to produce the fastest last 200m split in the race to show he has what it takes to be competitive in the Prelude. The step up to 1100m looks to suit him to a tee, so look for him to run a big race at a nice price.
