Blamey Stakes betting preview – February 27, 2021

The Group 2 Blamey Stakes kicks starts the quaddie at Flemington on Saturday afternoon. The $200,000 race has this year attracted a field of 11 with five Group 1 victories between them. The Mike Moroney-trained Buffalo River has opened as a $3.30 favourite and will look to lead all the way with Jamie Kah on board. The 2019 and 2020 winner of the Blamey Stakes, Fifty Stars, is back to defend his crown and push for a hat-trick.

The speed in the 2021 Blamey Stakes looks to come from the favourite, with Star Of The Seas and Best Of Days to settle just off heels of the leader. The likes of Mystic Journey, Vassilator and Mahamedeis will set to settle towards the rear of the field.

We are happy to side with Buffalo River (#11), who was unlucky not to hold on for the victory first up over the 1400m here a fortnight ago. On that day he looked the winner all the way but ran into the red-hot Regardsmaree, who pipped him on the line. The Mike Moroney-trained five-year-old is yet to finish worse than third when second up, and that record includes two victories. With a quiet time out in front, Buffalo River will have a bit left in the tank in the home straight and should be hard to run down.

The main danger to our top selection looks to come from this year’s Carlyon Cup winner, Best Of Days (#5). The Godolphin galloper maps to take a sit just off the leader and, with a bit of luck from barrier nine, should be featuring in the finish. Trainer James Cummings will be glad to see a firm track forecasted for Saturday, as Best Of Days excels on surfaces in the Good range. His win in the Carlyon Cup was the first time that Damien Oliver had been on board the gelding, and the pair look a decent chance to notch another victory this weekend.

Fifty Stars (#1) has form at Flemington that is hard to ignore. The Dabernig & Hayes stallion has four wins to his name from 10 starts at Racing HQ, including the last two editions of the Blamey Stakes. He is arguably the class runner in the field and will be giving 4kg away to the favourite, but he loves the track and distance and will be hard to leave out of the calculations.
