Aspiration Quality 2021 betting preview

A field of 18 mares will do battle for a $160,000 purse in the Group 3 Sharp Extensive IT Aspiration Quality at Royal Randwick this Saturday. Nimalee is the $4.20 favourite ahead of She’s Ideel at $6 and Polly Grey at $9. There isn’t a great deal of speed in this 1600m contest, with Missybeel and Nimalee likely to find the front.

German import Cliff’s Art (#6) got a big tick after her first Australian start when fifth to Poetic Charmer three weeks ago. After settling down last against the fence, Tom Sherry opted to stick to the inside – arguably the worst part of the track on the day – but the Canford Cliffs mare still managed to finish off with the best last 800m race sectional. She has won four of her nine starts, with two of those coming at the mile, including a Listed win in Mares grade in her final German start. She has drawn wide in barrier 14 under Tim Clark, so we expect to see her push further forward and be close enough make an impact.

Nimalee (#12) was really good first up this campaign when winning the James Ruse Benchmark 100 Handicap by 1.8 lengths two weeks ago at Rosehill. She had the run of the race and put paid to her rivals in the straight, suggesting she has come back better than ever as she heads towards the Coolmore Legacy. The four-year-old daughter of So You Think has mixed it with the big guns, placing at Group 3 level in the Angst Stakes during the spring, and consistently flies under the radar, so she might be underrated again in this.

Outback Diva (#9) raced away with the prize in the Canberra Mile two weeks ago, beating Entente by two lengths. By More Than Ready, she too is a model of consistency, winning five and placing in a further eight of her 19 career starts, so she should be competitive again in this. Staying on a dry track and drawn to get cover off a slow speed in barrier 12 will suit the five-year-old mare again. Jean Van Overmeire retains the ride after winning the Canberra Mile with her last start, and we can expect Outback Diva to close off strongly again.
