2021 Angus Armanasco Stakes betting preview – Saturday, February 20

The Group 2 Angus Armanasco Stakes has brought together a field of eight three-year-old fillies to fight it out for $200,000 over 1400m. With a few of these looking to get a spot in some of the big races in Sydney over the next month or two, this looks set to be a strong form reference going forward.

It’s been a tough race to find the winner in recently, with favourite backers coming up empty every year since 2015. The winner last year was La Tene for Anthony Cummings in a bit of a boilover at $18 odds. This year we expect the Danny O’Brien-trained Safe Passage (#4) to take up the running from barrier one, with the in-form Malicorne (#3) to settle just on her outside.

When markets opened and you could get $10 and up for Chica Fuerte (#2), it was hard to pass it up. She was last seen competing in the Group 1 Empire Rose on Derby Day last year, and despite a poor run there, her form prior suggests she is right in this race first up from a spell. Having chased home Thermosphere and Cambourne during the spring, her win in the Ethereal Stakes was well deserved. It means she has been around Caulfield as a winner, and we expect a decent showing as Mark Zahra hops board for the first time. Despite being a maiden on firmer surfaces, she has only missed the minor money once from five starts. From barrier seven Chica Fuerte should settle in the moving line and give herself every chance at a nice price.

When you have run the quinella in all but one of your eight starts to date, you demand attention in any race you line up in. Malicorne pushed the classy La Mexicana to within a short half-head a fortnight ago, and a similar performance on Saturday would see her go very close in the Angus Armanasco Stakes. If her runs this campaign suggest anything, it is that she performs at an even higher level when dictating terms. If she can settle either outside Safe Passage or just in front, then she will take some catching as she looks to bring up her first black-type win.

The favourite, Impecunious (#6), was ultra impressive on her Australian debut on December 16, but it remains to be seen what she actually beat that day. We are happy to take her on with proven performers in Aussie conditions.
