Summer Cup 2020 horse racing preview

The Group 3 Summer Cup is the feature race for Randwick’s Boxing Day meeting this weekend. With Greysful Glamour likely to lead Spirit Ridge, Wolfe and Vadiyaan, it’s sure to be a genuinely run 2000m. Spirit Ridge has slight favouritism at the time of writing, but there are two or three that we like better.

Greysful Glamour took out the Listed ATC Cup last month and went back-to-back with a win in the Group 2 Villiers Stakes. She steps back up to 2000m where she goes great guns, especially on a drying track. Drawn in barrier nine under regular rider Rachel King, she does rise in weight to 59kg and finds herself in a bit of a speed battle, but she is rock-hard fit and absolutely flying.

Laure Me In opened as a joint $4 favourite and is the one who will finish strongly. The six-year-old gelding ran 2.5 lengths off Gresyful Glamour a month ago over this trip and has since won a trial which would have brought him on for this. Jumping from barrier four under Tommy Berry, he’ll settle in the back half and get a lovely cart into the race. With just 54kg on his back, he’ll be hard to fend off.

John Thompson’s Primitivo finds himself at a suitable trip for the first time this campaign. Coming off a fast-finishing fourth to Kirwin’s Lane last start over a mile, the son of Sebring has two wins and six placings from 18 starts at the 2000m. From barrier three, Jay Ford will let the speed horses cross him from out wide has he settles in the back half of the field. Look for Primitivo to hit the line strongly.
